Flokati Beach: Being Black in Germany's Public Sphere
TINCON
Pattenhalle - Bühne 1
At the latest since the Black Lives Matter movement arrived in Germany in 2020, many white people have understood that being Black in Germany is always political. But has the situation really changed for BIPoCs (Black and Indigenous People of Colour; non-white people) since then, and if so, how? What does it mean to have to constantly take a stand on this not only in private but also in public? And when does one become a token, i.e. an unwanted symbolic figure?
In their jobs, our guests are often the only Black person. As so-called 'public figures' they are particularly visible on the screens of Germany's politics, music industry or media landscape. How do they deal with this? And why do they always have to face this question?
